America's water infrastructure is aging fast. We built a better way to find what's leaking.

2.2 million miles of pipe. An average age of 78 years. Over one million active leaks at any given moment. Dowse exists to close that gap.

America Is Losing
Its Water

2.2 million miles of pipe. Average age: 78 years. A water main breaks every 2 minutes. The scale of the problem is staggering, and it keeps growing.

A Crisis Hidden Underground

There are more than 1 million active leaks in US water systems right now. Only 240,000 get found and fixed each year.

New leaks develop at roughly the same rate old ones are found. The standing inventory of active leaks never shrinks because utilities lack the detection capacity to get ahead of the curve.

Average leak run time before detection: 2 to 5 years. Cumulative value per undetected leak: $35,000 to $55,000 or more.

Current Detection Has Limits

Acoustic Detection

  • Sound travels only 100 ft on PVC pipe vs. 1,000 ft on metal
  • Muffled by deep soil, thick pavement, and traffic noise
  • Covers only 1 to 3 miles per day per crew
  • Requires skilled operators who are in short supply

Satellite / SAR

  • 80% hit rate on investigated points of interest
  • High upfront cost at $85K+ per survey
  • Cannot pinpoint exact leak location
  • Requires ground crew verification regardless
65 to 75% of all water leaks never surface. A fundamentally different screening approach is needed -- one that can cover more ground, find subsurface leaks, and deliver pinpoint accuracy.

We built Dowse to break this equilibrium. See how we do it.

The Dowse
Solution

K9 scent screening combined with acoustic verification. High coverage. High confidence. Results your crews can act on immediately.

Three Steps to Finding Your Lost Water

01

K9 Screening

Trained detection dogs identify chlorinated water VOCs escaping through soil. Each team covers 5 to 15 miles per day across residential easements, yards, and utility corridors.

02

Acoustic Verification

Every K9 alert is verified with a leak correlator and ground microphone. Only confirmed leaks are reported, eliminating false positives and giving your team the confidence to act.

03

Utility Report

GPS-tagged, verified leak locations delivered with estimated severity and repair priority. Your crews repair. We track recovery metrics to demonstrate measurable ROI.

Why K9 Detection Works

  • Chlorinated water reacts with soil to produce volatile organic compounds -- trihalomethanes and chloroform -- that migrate upward through the soil column and escape at the surface.
  • A trained detection dog identifies this unique chemical signature, distinct from irrigation or rainfall, with extraordinary precision.
  • NIST/FBI-validated PDMS polymer training aids replicate target VOC profiles for standardized, repeatable training.
  • Proven in field deployments: Central Arkansas Water reported 97% accuracy in its first 6 months of K9 detection operations.

Built by Operators.
Driven by Purpose.

Dowse was founded in 2026 by Luke Smiley and Greg Kamstra -- two operators united by a shared passion for environmental impact and a belief that the right tool for the job can be found at the end of a leash.

Meet the Team

Greg Kamstra
Co-Founder

Greg brings a unique combination of financial sophistication and deep hands-on expertise in dog services and training. After beginning his career in management consulting, he spent the bulk of his career in private equity and public markets investing, then made the leap to build Riverdog, a multi-unit pet care business, from the ground up -- including raising institutional capital for it.

Greg's experience scaling a business grounded in animal behavior, dog training, and handler relationships gives Dowse a powerful operational foundation. He understands both what it takes to build a company and what it takes to develop high-performing detection dogs.

A Shared Passion for the Environment

Luke and Greg share a deep conviction that clean, accessible water is one of the defining challenges of our time -- and that the tools to protect it already exist. By pairing the extraordinary sensory capabilities of detection dogs with rigorous acoustic verification, Dowse is building a faster, more accurate, and more scalable way to find and fix the leaks quietly draining America's water systems. Every gallon we recover is a small act of environmental stewardship at scale.
